The most obvious and usually visible feature of any safety footwear is the toe protection which is in place to prevent injury to the wearer’s toes from falling objects or crushing; traditionally this has been made from steel.

With the introduction of new materials and clever design, safety footwear can now feature more discreet toecaps using reinforced polymers and aluminium allowing them to look more like normal shoes, boots and trainers; these new materials can also make the footwear lighter, adding comfort to an essential piece of PPE. Sometimes overlooked, the sole of your safety footwear needs to be chosen to suit the environment they will be worn in.

Safety footwear can feature puncture-resistant midsoles made from steel or composite materials, tread designs that help to prevent slips and falls and special vinyl and rubbers that offer cold and heat insulation, oil and acid resistance and energy absorption. Other considerations are ankle protection, waterproofness and unique features such as lace protection for environments where sparks and hot metals can land on the footwear. All safety footwear is required to meet an international standard which specifies basic and additional (optional) requirements for safety footwear used for general purposes.
