Gloves
It is believed that 25% of all work injuries are handling related so wearing the correct hand protection in the workplace not only keeps workers safe, it also protects the employer from claims and lost productivity due to injury related sick days. Gloves can help to prevent obvious injuries and infections caused by cuts, punctures and chemicals but other hazards such as extreme heat or cold, viruses and prolonged immersion in water should not be overlooked.
Selecting the correct glove for the intended application is a critical process and should only be undertaken by a qualified person. It is important to remember that no single glove material will offer protection against all substances and hazards and even when the correct product is established, it will not maintain that same level of protection forever. Safety gloves must meet strict standards which determine levels of protection offered against; mechanical risks, namely abrasion, cut, tear, puncture and where relevant, impact, chemical and micro-organism risks and thermal risks be it hot or cold. Gloves can be manufactured from many different synthetic and natural materials including leather, latex rubber, nitrile, cotton, polyester, and vinyl. Specialist coatings and additional features can also be added to safety gloves to improve grip, offer liquid resistance and reduce damage to hands from impacts, collisions and burns. Reducing injuries from cuts is a primary concern in many industrial environments and this is often overcome by choosing gloves which use knitted fabrics that contain strands of highly cut resistant material such as steel, Kevlar and Dyneema; glove liners which include these reinforcing fibres can be combined with other gloves that do not have their own inherent cut protection. In certain applications that involve the handling of small components and performing intricate tasks, fingerless gloves may be permitted, even when cut resistance is mandatory. Protrade offer a comprehensive range of handling gloves, cut resistant gloves, chemical gloves, welding gloves and disposable gloves with expert advice available.
