Overshoes & Coveralls
Disposable coveralls and overshoes are designed to cover the whole body and offer protection from outside contaminants as well as prevent dirt and contamination in; food preparation areas, clean rooms, laboratories, crime scenes or quite simply, newly decorated and carpeted areas. Disposable coveralls are manufactured to be durable enough to provide suitable protection against workplace hazards but are designed to be discarded at the point of removal, eliminating the possibility of repeat exposure to harmful agents.
Protective disposable coveralls are categorized by the contaminents they are designed to protect against with typical hazards being toxic dust and particulates such as asbestos, bacteria, viruses and chemicals which could be poisonous or corrosive. The fabric the garment is made out of will determine its effectiveness as a barrier and its resilience to abrasion. Typically, coveralls which are manufactured from the most breathable fabric offer lower particulate and wet resistance, especially over prolonged periods, although they tend to be the most comfortable as the material offers greater breathability and makes them cooler to wear. Non-Woven materials are frequently referred to and can be explained as fibres that are neither knitted or woven; instead these fibres are extruded from a die and blown by air onto a conveyor belt where they form a tangled and randomly layered fabric, Spunbond and Meltblown are two versions of non-woven fabric. There are four material types used in coverall manufacture: Tyvek manufactured by Dupont uses shredded polyethylene fibres to form a synthetic paper that has so many twists and turns in its construction it does not allow particles to pass through but still has some breathable properties. Microporous laminates take a polypropylene non-woven material and thermally laminate a polyethylene film to it, the film can be breathable or non-breathable. Microporous laminated fabrics offer very high resistance to particulates and liquids but are less breathable, versions of the fabric featuring the non-breathable laminate offer the very highest protection and prove to work well in areas that are constantly wet. SMS fabrics (Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond) are a sandwich material which usually combines two layers of Spunbond polypropylene with a Meltblown very fine non-woven centre layer which helps to filter out dry particulates and chemicals. SMS fabrics are very breathable and can be treated with other processes which can increase higher levels of chemical and liquid protection. Non-woven polypropylene fabrics are very breathable but offer the lowest level of protection. As a low cost material this type of coverall is intended for low risk applications and is commonly used for visitors to manufacturing facilities where short term protection is required. In certain applications a coverall can combine two material types to offer high levels of protection and comfort; in these cases the garment may feature a microporous laminate at the front to protect from splashes and spray but have a breathable SMS material at the back to provide increased ventilation to the wearer.
