You are more likely to be safe if you are seen which is why high visibility workwear could be one of the most valuable garments you possess. High visibility clothing is highly luminescent in its natural matt state and easily distinguishable in natural and working backgrounds. If you are working in any environment where there are fork trucks, construction traffic or trains it is essential that you are wearing the correct designated high visibility workwear. Yellow and orange are the only officially recognised colours for high visibility workwear. Orange is specified for the rail industry as yellow features in rail signalling and with most railtrack work being undertaken in the countryside, orange is considered less likely to blend in with greenery and hence be more visible. High visibility workwear has to have a minimum surface area of retro-reflective material present on the item of clothing. EN ISO 20471:2013 includes three different classes. Class 3 has the highest visibility. Class 1 + class 2 doesn’t always equal class 3. It depends on the size of the area of the respective material.
Class
Total Fluorescent Area
Class 1
Must be at least 0.14 m² and 0.10 m² reflective material.
Class 2
Must be at least 0.5 m² and 0.13 m² reflective material.
Class 3
Must be at least 0.8 m² and 0.2 m² reflective material.
