Ground preparation before the laying of concrete, slabs or paviours is essential if you want a flat, properly compacted base to work from, asphalt also requires that it is thoroughly compacted to give it a durable and neat surface finish. Petrol plate compactors, sometimes known as Wacker plates, forcefully vibrate to tamp down loose soil, sand, gravel and asphalt to prevent the loose granular nature of these materials unsettling and being vulnerable to weathering. Petrol plate compactors require no external power supply as they have their own inbuilt petrol engine making them ideal for working on large external areas. Some plate compactors have a water tank which prevents warm asphalt from sticking to the cold plate of the compactor, a slightly rounded base plate is also advantageous on asphalt limiting the possibility of gouging this soft material and making the machine easier to manoeuvre. Other features of plate compactors can include a cast base plate which tends to be stiffer than steel and can improve compaction performance, anti vibration handles make the compactor more comfortable and safer to use and lifting points and eyes are particularly useful when picking up these heavy machines so they can be transported.
