Impact Wrenches
If you ever need to tighten up or loosen nuts and bolts quickly it’s important that you use the correct power tool. There is a specific machine designed exactly for this application and it’s called an impact wrench. Impact wrenches have been around since 1939 and were designed to provide a much faster method of tightening or loosening nuts and bolts which were used extensively in engineering, construction and automotive trades when there were less automation and fewer advanced fastening solutions, hence this is why they are sometimes referred to as speed ratchets.
Impact wrenches release stored energy on a rotating hammer mechanism, which delivers bursts of very high torque, twisting action, onto a shaft that is connected to a socket, which fits onto the fastener. These repetitive hammer blows happen thousands of times a minute and it is these continuous strikes that enable even the largest nuts and bolts to be fixed or removed with little effort from the operator. When impact wrenches were introduced they were large heavy machines and only available in pneumatic (air-powered) or electric versions. With the introduction of high capacity batteries, impact wrenches with incredible torque are now possible and there are of course no air hoses or electric cables to get in the way, trip over or cut through.
Cordless impact wrenches are perfect for steel erectors, scaffolders, automotive manufacturers and rail contractors. Before purchasing an impact wrench you need to consider what size nuts and bolts you are likely to work with as this will decide the size of the square drive on the impact wrench, the bigger the bolt the larger the drive. Impact wrenches secure the socket to the shaft in different ways with the most popular being a friction ring. it is common to find a locking pin on larger drive impact wrenches. It is very important that only impact rated sockets are used on impact wrenches as they are designed to take sudden bursts of torque and will not shatter.
