The reciprocating action of the machine provides a cutting action on the up stroke as the blade is pulled towards the base plate; although down cutting jigsaw blades are available to reduce splintering, it’s a fact that up-cutting blades work with the machine and downcut blades work against it, making the machine more difficult to control.

A lifelong challenge for jigsaws to overcome, is the ability to make a cut which is 90 degrees to the surface, this is a downside to the blade only being supported at one end, as it allows the blade to waiver the further away it is from the clamping mechanism. A number of manufacturers have pioneered different methods to improve the vertical accuracy of the cut including rollers and adjustable blade guides. Mafell take a different approach and remove the guide altogether and rely on a larger diameter drive rod and double thickness blades which resist any flex or movement.
