Surface preparation and finishing are critical processes in any woodworking, metalworking and refurbishment project. When a material is abraded, scratches are being applied to the surface and it’s these scratches which can dramatically improve the ability for paint and adhesives to adhere to it or simply give the surface an attractive finish. Tight corners, hard to reach areas and unusual shapes make surface finishing difficult which is where detail sanders can save time and money. Most detail sanders work by oscillation which allows them to offer very effective sanding, despite the small movement of the pad, by delivering thousands of oscillations per minute.
Other specialist detail sanders can abrade awkward shapes by offering conformable and shape specific backing pad kits, in this instance it’s common for a linear sanding action (forward and backward motion) to be used. Triangular headed detail sanders are by far the most common, with the differences between brands being the size or degree of pad movement and the geometry of the pad itself.
