Corded Hammers & Breakers
Removing tiles, breaking concrete and demolishing walls are all things that can be done with some heavy duty hand tools and brute force, but there are portable power tools that can do the same job with less effort and greater speed such as corded hammers and breakers.
An electric hammer or breaker is a power tool that uses a hammering action on a chisel or drill bit inserted into it – imagine a lump hammer and cold chisel contained within a small casing connected to a motor. Machines which only have a linear hammer mechanism are called breakers or demolition hammers. These machines only have one function which is to deliver powerful blows to the end of chisels, points and compacting heads for breaking, scraping, chipping and compacting.
The size of breaker required will be decided by the application, as a breaker which is too powerful can cause damage to underlying substrates and surrounding material, it will also incur a weight penalty. A machine which is not powerful enough, will take longer to carry out the task and will be working beyond its breaking capacity, leading to premature burn out. The impact power of the machine, often referred to as blow energy is measured in Joules and will be listed in the tools specification.
Small breakers and power scrapers are ideal for removing render and surface concrete imperfections. Medium sized breakers are capable of being held in horizontal and vertical positions and are primarily selected for tasks such as removing bricks, heavy duty scraping and breaking of thin screeds and concrete. Heavy duty breakers are more likely to have a longer body which allows the operator to stand in a more upright position reducing fatigue although they can be used in horizontal applications; suitable for breaking up concrete and brickwork, heavy duty breakers can make light work of many domestic and commercial demolition tasks.
For very thick concrete a floor breaker is required; these machines can only be used in a vertical position and are ideal for thick concrete floors and slabs. Electric floor breakers are a common choice for sites with a plug in power supply, for applications where power is not readily available, a hydraulic breaker pack which is equipped with a petrol engined generator provides a perfect on-site breaking solution.
Protrade provide a comprehensive range of breakers and demolition hammers which work with power tool accessories from the SDS Max, K taper, 28mm and 1″ 1/4 tool reception systems. For operators that need to drill holes and perform breaking and scraping duties a rotary hammer is the tool you will require.
Rotary and combination hammers are able to break and chisel as well as perform drilling tasks; in fact, 3 function rotary hammers can also drill in a plain rotary (without hammer) mode when drilling wood and metal, although this function is only found on smaller SDS plus machines which are only suitable for very light chiselling. Due to their versatility, rotary hammers are an ideal tool for builders, shopfitters and contractors that have applications for a medium capacity breaker with the capability of drilling large diameter holes using SDS Max drill bits and core bits.
