Pressure Washers
Pressure Washers are intrinsically a motorised hosepipe delivering a powerful and direct concentrated jet of water to remove dirt and grime quickly and effectively. Pressure washers work by using a pump to create a high-pressure flow of water that will eliminate and dislodge dirt without the need for scrubbing, brushing and any other manual intervention.
Most pressure washers will be equipped with a lance – the bit that you hold and aim, and a hose capable of dealing with the high-pressure water generated by the washer. Depending on the application the pressure washer is to be used in will determine the jet or spray pattern required. Quite often the spray pattern can be adjusted by an adjustable nozzle at the end of the lance.
A basic guide is the wider the fan spray the more gentle the cleaning action and the narrower the fan the more powerful and aggressive the cleaning will be; right down to a single jet of water which can be aimed directly at very stubborn stains and thick, compacted soiling. The cleaning power is also affected by the distance the nozzle is held from the area to be cleaned.
It is essential that users select the correct pressure washer for the job. More power is not always better and in some cases, more power can be less effective or in fact damage the item being cleaned; blasting mud from the caterpillar tracks of an earth-moving machine will require a more powerful pressure washer than one for cleaning your car at the weekend where such powerful jets could remove paint or penetrate waterproof seals.
Some manufacturers offer accessories for their pressure washers which are designed for specific tasks, for example, a rotary brush powered by the water jet for cleaning moss from pathways and slabs. For extremely difficult tasks some pressure washers use hot water which further aids cleaning power. Pressure washers are available in electric or even petrol and diesel where an electric power supply is not available.
Although it sounds obvious all pressure washers require a water supply which can be as easy as connecting a garden hose or working in remote areas by using a water bowser.
