SDS Plus Rotary Hammers
SDS Plus rotary hammers or ‘Slotted Drive System’ machines were invented to improve drilling speed and comfort in masonry drilling applications. The SDS plus chuck allows the insertion of a slotted shank drill bit which is thrust forward and into the masonry by an anvil striking the back of the bit, this is set in motion by a piston within the machine. This system only allows the drill bit to move back and forward unlike an impact percussion machine where the entire chuck assembly joins the drill bit in the hammering operation.
Due to the anvil making direct contact with the end of drill bit, no energy is dissipated through the chuck which increases the blow energy, allowing the drill point to break up the base material quicker. The blow energy of SDS plus rotary hammers is measured in Joules with a higher value indicating a harder hit.
Since their introduction in 1975, SDS drilling machines have become much more than just a masonry drilling power tool. 2 mode SDS machines can hammer drill using SDS plus drill bits and also use straight shank bits when the machine is placed in plain rotary mode for drilling steel and wood. 3 mode machines add a chisel only function which utilises the hammering impact of the tool but prevents the accessory, such as a chisel, from turning so the machine can be used for very light chiselling and breaking functions.
SDS rotary hammers can vary in body type with some featuring an inline body whereas other machines are an ‘L’ shape and look like a small breaker as the motor is mounted at 90 degrees to the gearbox; this design is popular with higher capacity, corded machines. Safety clutches are a worthy feature on an SDS rotary hammer as they help to prevent injury to the operator if the drill bit should snag in the base material and twist the machine in an uncontrollable manner.
