Impact Percussion Drills
Impact percussion drills are sometimes confused with hammer drills, in fact when using an impact percussion machine there is no hammering of the drill bit, instead, two geared plates ride over one another creating thousands of low energy impacts per minute which are passed through the entire chuck assembly and onto the drill bit. Although the impact force generated is very low the volume of impacts are significant enough to allow faster drilling in masonry when using an impact masonry drill bit.
Impact percussion machines use a 3 jaw chuck assembly which can grip standard cylindrical drill bits and any other chuck mounted power tool accessory; with the impact mechanism turned off these machines are also capable of drilling wood, metal and performing screwdriving duties making this machine a versatile power tool for joiners, builders, kitchen fitters, plumbers and electricians. Impact percussion drills equipped with a multi purpose drill bit, set on high speed and without the impact mechanism engaged are capable of drilling masonry faster than an equivalent SDS Plus hammer drill for 5-7mm diameter holes, also reducing the possibility of damaging the base material, particularly when working close to an edge or in soft brick. Protrade stock impact percussion machines from Metabo who invented the concept in 1957.
