When it comes to router cutters, it’s important to invest in a high-quality product, due to the fact that may routers operate at speeds of over 20,000 RPM, and so a cutting edge which will not dull quickly is imperative. The majority of router cutters feature a TCT (tungsten carbide tip) which is brazed onto a steel body and a wear and heat resistant tip, although some router cutters are manufactured from solid carbide bar.

Router cutters are available with different sized shanks, the most popular being 1/4″ and 1/2″. Larger diameter cutters should always be used on a 1/2″ shank as this will reduce deflection, vibration and prevent snapping when removing large amounts of material. It is also good practice to regularly check the collets in your router, as this is the component that holds your router cutter in place. Any collet wear and tear can cause a loss of grip on the cutter shank, leading to minute vibrations which are noticeable when your router is operating at a high RPM. This vibration will result in a lower quality finish and will cause discomfort to the machine operator. In extreme cases, it may even cause the cutter to become loose, causing injury.
