Mixing Paddles
Mixing paddles are power tool accessories that are designed to turn, fold and stir liquids and compounds such as paint, plaster, resins and adhesives.
You should select a paddle diameter which is between a third and a half of the mixing tub or container; this is to ensure the mix is pulled into and through your paddle, it also helps to reduce damage to your mixing container.
They enable materials to be thoroughly mixed and blended ensuring products perform well in terms of their application and final appearance. In some cases, products that are not mixed correctly will fail to cure.
Mixing paddles are available in various head diameters and typically two different fittings which attach the mixing paddle to your machine; M14 and Hexagon shank. The M14 fitting tends to be best suited to dedicated paddle mixers whereas the Hexagon shank type is normally used on drills with a standard 3 jaw chuck and High Torque motor.
The most widely used mixing paddles are the ‘twin propeller design’ which are designed for use with low viscosity materials such as paints, chemicals, bitumen and casting compounds, they are more likely to be mounted on a hex shank fitting and feature a smaller diameter mixing head. Another common mixing paddle is the ‘spiral paddle design’, this consists of 2 helix type blades with a 3rd then overlapping them both.
These paddles are usually found with an M14 fitting as they work best with dedicated high torque paddle mixing machines. The design of this particular mixing paddle turns the material by pulling it from the bottom to the top creating a smooth and consistent mix. Selecting the right size paddle for the job is also essential as bigger isn’t always better.
