Drilling metal is a task that can be achieved by using many different types of drilling accessory, each with their own particular features and benefits. Selecting the right drilling accessory for metal is often contingent on the type and thickness of the metal and the size of the hole required.
Jobbers and twist drills are the most popular drill bits for metal and are best suited for smaller diameter holes as they drill by removing the material from the centre outwards. Vari bits and step drills are ideal for fast drilling in sheet metal and combine a number of drilling diameters in a single bit. Annular hole cutters, often referred to as broaching cutters are well suited to making large diameter holes in thick metal as the cutting action action is performed by specially ground teeth that only remove material from the outside edge of the hole offering fast drilling and perfectly round holes. Extremely long service life and even faster drilling is achieved when TCT annular hole cutters are used in comparison to traditional high speed steel (HSS) broaching cutters.
