The invention of the keyless chuck was groundbreaking at the time, negating the chuck key which was an essential item designed to be lost and never found. The chuck ‘without key’ saved time because it evenly gripped the drill bit or power tool accessory, and was opened and closed in a fraction of the time it would take for a key type or geared chuck to complete the same manoeuvre.
Keyless chucks are not without issues though; some impact mechanisms can shake themselves loose, requiring a locking system to be present for use with an impact drill. High torque applications such as diamond drilling can end up over-tightening the chuck to such an extent that the chuck breaks, or it’s virtually impossible to undo it by hand.
