Vices, Clamps & Magnets
Vices ,clamps and magnets can be found in any joinery or fabrication workshop and are used to temporarily hold workpieces while they are being machined, welded or glued. Clamps and vices typically use a thread and turning handle to apply adjustable pressure to the workpiece. Even most speed clamps, which work by using a clamp head that slides along a rail, still require the final clamping action to be delivered by the turn of a thread, allowing incremental force to be applied. Specialist welding clamps use a copper-plated thread spindle to prevent welding spatter from sticking to the threads.
Other ‘thread free’ clamp designs that use a moving clamp head and rail work by locking the clamp head against the bar. As pressure is exerted, the workpiece is finally secured by using a ratchet or lever mechanism within, or on, the clamping head. There are other variations of clamping systems, such as band clamps which are ideal for round or odd shape workpieces, spring clamps that exert limited holding power and therefore have to be used in significant numbers and specialist edge clamps for door lippings and edging.
Application typically leads the clamp selection process with consideration of clamping force required, fixed or pivoting jaws which may feature protective pads, if the clamp is required to squeeze together or push apart and the clamping surface area the tool provides.
Protrade stock a range of G clamps, quickgrip clamps, body clamps, spring clamps, edge clamps, speed clamps and F clamps with even more available to order. Vices always need to be mounted on a bench, tripod or stand and tend to use jaws to secure regular shapes and chains and straps to hold pipes and other harder to clamp objects. Woodworking vices have the top of the jaws inline with the workbench whereas engineering vices are secured to the top of the bench using bolts and may feature swivelling bases and even small anvils.
A single clamp or lone vice never seems to be enough when you are looking to invest in quality holding power, so why not consider one of our 0% finance options? Protrade’s 0% finance option allows you to take immediate delivery of essential tools and equipment and pay monthly so you are fully equipped but not left short of cash. Order your vices, clamps and magnets from us today.
