Knives
Knives have been used since prehistoric times and have been made from materials such as flint, bronze, iron and more recently even ceramic. We all take the knife for granted these days but it’s one of the most significant inventions that mankind has ever produced. This simple cutting tool has allowed us to defend, hunt and build shelter.
The term stanley knife usually refers to a working or utility knife as it’s associated with tradespeople. The trapezoidal shaped blade is recognised the world over and its robust and sharp blade lends itself well to scoring, cutting and even scraping; it has been adopted by nearly every utility knife manufacturer. There have been very few improvements to this blade over the years although more recently the introduction of Bi-Metal construction featuring a HSS (high speed steel) cutting edge improves blade life by retaining the sharp cutting edge for longer also resisting snapping and point breakage. This classic blade features in retractable knives, fixed blade utility knives, self retracting knives and folding utility knives, it can be found in some window scrapers too; round point and hooked utility blades are also available which use the same twin locating notches.
Snap off knives use a long, razor sharp blade which has clearly defined segments scored upon it. As the end of the blade is worn through use, it’s possible to ‘snap off’ this section of the blade and push through a new, sharp pointed, razor edged blade to start work all over again. In some applications such as trimming back expanding foam around window and door frames, the full extension of a snap off blade can be utilised to make clean cuts in these more difficult to reach areas.
We stock and sell a comprehensive range of knives to suit all trades, whether you need to cut and strip electrical cables, slice packaging materials or trim carpets, vinyls, fabrics and polythene sheeting. Hand scrapers come in a variety of widths, lengths and blade types but one thing that all have in common is a stiff blade that is designed to remove material, unlike a filling knife which has a more flexible blade and is designed to apply compounds and fillers.
We also have a range of scrapers that can be used to remove wallpaper, previously applied resins, flooring compounds and paint. Blade edges vary from dull, which prevents gouging, razor sharp to facilitate easy lifting of unwanted compounds on hard flat areas and even reversible TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) for paint removal which are designed to be pulled towards the user rather than pushed away. Scrapers will find their way into any refurbishment project and are ideal for decorators, joiners, kitchen fitters and builders.
