Rivets
There are many types of rivets available but the basic, original design of a cylindrical fastener is one of the oldest and most reliable. It works by pulling material together through deformation of the tail end, and can be seen on landmarks such as the Eiffel tower and Empire State building. The rivets used in these constructions were high strength structural rivets which necessitate having access to both sides of the material. The tail end is hammered into a mushroom shape when the rivet is glowing white hot, contracting as it cools to form a very strong, structural fastening, This type of rivet has now widely been replaced with structural bolts but modern designs of rivets are extensively used throughout industry, offering a fast and cost effective, fastening solution.
One of the most popular rivets currently used in manufacturing processes today is the blind rivet, which is used when access from only one side is possible. The riveting concept of tail deformation is still the same, but the flaring of the tail end is actuated by a mandrel with an oversized tip, which runs through the entire length of the hollow rivet body. With the rivet situated in a pre-drilled hole within the base materials, the mandrel is pulled through the body of the rivet towards the head of the fastener causing the outer casing to expand to a wider diameter than the hole whilst simultaneously contracting in length, thus pulling the two base materials tightly together. This process can be performed by hand riveter, air and cordless riveting machines or in high volume production environments by means of automated equipment. Common materials used in rivet manufacture are steel, aluminium and stainless steel.
