Collated Nails & Staples
Since the introduction of pneumatic, cordless and gas operated power tools, most of the nails and staples installed on site these days is done by a machine. These often use a collated strip of fasteners; the speed and accuracy of a power tool is the main advantage and it also avoids bruised thumbs, dents in the base material and negates the space required to swing a hammer. Unless you are a fencing contractor it is unusual to find single or loose staples which can be inserted by using a hammer whereas loose nails are readily available.
Staples can offer a fixing advantage over nails due to the crown which connects both of the legs together and thus spreads the secure holding power; this makes staples ideal for fabrics, polythene and thin board materials. Individual nails typically come in boxes or tubs and are available in many different versions depending on the application.
Oval brad, lost head, round wire, clout and panel pins are specifically designed to be inserted into or through building materials made of timber and plasterboard. Square twist nails are usually specified for securing builders metalwork such as joist hangers and masonry nails, as the name would suggest, can be hammered directly into brickwork.
