Hand sanitisers are formulated to quickly disinfect the skin by rapidly killing germs and therefore limit the risk of spreading infection by personal contact and the transfer of bacteria to surfaces. Hand sanitisers commonly use alcohol as the main active ingredient as it kills most known bacteria although the concentration of alcohol present will determine its effectiveness, typical concentrations are between 35% – 80%. Other ingredients are added to hand sanitisers such as thickening agents which make the product easy to apply and skin conditioners which help to reduce dryness.
