Wire Brushes, Wheels & Wool
Wire brushes and wheels are very effective at removing paint, burrs, surface contaminants and impurities – mainly from metal based materials, although they can be used to give a distressed surface appearance on wood. The advantage of a wire brush over an abrasive is they remove hardly any of the base material and resist clogging as there is nowhere for the contaminant to cling to. Wire brushes are only effective when the tip of the wire is in contact with the surface which is why brush type, shape and type of wire is important when selecting the brush you require. A wire brush can come in the form of a hand tool or power tool accessory.
Hand held wire brushes can also be known as scratch brushes or rivet brushes and may feature multiple rows of wires, in the case of a convergent wire brush the rows are angled to converge in the middle allowing wire stability and access to internal corners which makes them popular for weld cleaning.
Wire brushes and wire wheels for power tools can be arbor mounted which tend to be used in slow speed die grinders and drills or screwed directly onto angle grinders in wheel or cup shapes. Wire brushes can use crimped wires which are less aggressive and ideal for light rust and oxidation duties, whereas a twist knot brush will be more aggressive as the wires are less likely to flare.
Different wire materials need to be selected depending on the base material, steel, stainless steel and brass being the most popular. If you are brushing carbon steel a mild steel wire will be fine but should the base material change to stainless steel a brush containing stainless steel wires must be used to prevent contamination and subsequent corrosion. It is worth noting that stainless steel wires can be used on mild steel but should not be used on stainless afterwards. Brass wires can be used for more delicate operations and are also used in environments where no sparks are allowed.
Protrade offer a comprehensive range of wire brushes with many more available to order for specific applications.
