Irwin Tools has grown to become a world leader in Irwin hand tools and power tool accessories. Irwin Tools UK is named after the founder Charles Irwin, an unlikely candidate considering he was actually a pharmacist. In 1884 Mr Irwin purchased the rights to a solid centre auger bit which was invented by a local Martinsville blacksmith, one of the pharmacy’s customers.
Some 40 years later, another blacksmith William Petersen invented the first locking pliers. The patented design was called Vise-Grip and this incredible hand tool became what is now an essential item in any tool kit. in 1993, Petersens’ company which was then called Amercian Tool Companies, acquired the Irwin Industrial Tool Company, bringing two innovative, American manufacturers together. Since then, Irwin Tools has grown exponentially through acquisition and now boasts some of the most well known and respected brands in the tool industry. Innovative products such as the Quik Grip clamp feature in almost every workshop and brands such as Marples and Record remain reference products for joiners and cabinet makers. Now owned by Stanley Black and Decker, Irwin Tools is set to continue on its path of innovation and product development.
